The Windsor Arms is a historic blend of nostaligia and new-millennium luxury tucked neatly away from the bustle of Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood. The original building dates from 1927 and features the neo-Gothic style of architecture that was an architectural marvel in burgeoning Toronto at the time. The original concept of proprietor pulp and paper magnet cum hotelier, William Arthur Price was to create a hotel that blended in with the nearby university’s signature Victorian buildings.
Rescued from derelict status by developer George Friedmann in 1995, his vision called for a resurrection of the property designed by architect Sol Wassermuhl. The mission was to ensure the integrity of the buildings original characteristics while upgrading the property to five-star luxury. The end result was opulence personified: mahogany furnishings based on 1920’s French styles, intimate suites replete with fireplaces, and timeless limestone in the bathrooms. Today’s Windsor Arms features 28 intimate luxury suites appointed with all the lavish finishes necessary for pampering; well equipped conference rooms for business; a full spa sanctuary and pool; and, a grand hall space large enough to accommodate a luxury car show!
Patron taste buds delight in The Tearoom, with its original 1927 fireplace, where they indulge in ‘afternoon tea’. The hotel’s main restaurant, The Living Room, rocks a “Euro-shabby” vibe with antique prints from the UK, oversized chesterfields, and elegant leather seating. Guests enjoy an extensive comfort food themed menu designed to satisfy the heartiest appetite. The sit-down bar offers an outrageous selection of 60 “crafts and drafts” which will quench the direst of thirsts, while the wine list, awarded The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence five years running, slakes the more sophisticated palate. W.A. Price might not have envisioned such an oasis in his day, but he would be pleased that today the Windsor Arms Hotel pampers A-listers, big-ticket musicians, and prestigious jet-setters alike.
